All Wales Coastal Path launch & Big Welsh Coastal Walk

To mark the official opening of the Wales Coastal Path on 5th May, three celebratory events will take place across Wales at Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay, Aberystwyth Promenade and Flint Castle. The free public events will see local business, food and drink producers, community groups and entertainers come together to mark the opening of the 870 mile (1400km) coast path and promote what is on offer along Wales’ stunning coastline. The Big Welsh Coastal Walk is a series of Ramblers Cymru walks being held over the weekend of the 5th May 2012 to coincide with the launch of the Wales Coastal Path. The Wales Coast Path will be a continuous path around the country available for walkers throughout and wheel chair users, cyclists and horse riders where practicable. It will be as near to the coast as legally and physically practicable, whilst fully taking into account the needs of health and safety, land management and conservation. Harvest Time.

Yes, the last of the first generation of pine trees planted in the forest, are being harvested behind the Old School Guest House. The previous blocks had been harvested, after ditching, replanting in rotation next to more mature blocks of trees for wind protection.

Whilst the rest of the country was shrouded in low cloud recently, our guests climbed Snowdon through the clouds to a spectacular view, returning tanned having taken in the sun from half way up, to the top.

The forest was deafening to the sound of song birds. On the very tops of pines, one could see, I assume, finch singing in reply to others… A crow chases a seagull while a buzzard mearly looks on from his high perch on a lone dead pine.

Looking over the wetlands of Cors Gyfelog, across the road from the ‘Old School Guest House’, formerly an iceage lake,now a flood plain and a ‘site of special scientific interest’ SSSI, a boardwalk snakes across, put in by the ‘Countryside Council for Wales. There,they graze wild ponies to manage the land. The land supports alot of rare habitats of plants, animals and marsh fritillary butterfly… the area covers 73.1 ha. The mosses form a watershed that feeds the Afon Dwyfach, a river running south that supports otters.

After a night of rain I awoke to snow down to 1500 ft. on Hebog and Bwlch Mawr behind the Old School. Going out to photograph these scenes, the sun has gone and the clouds have rolled in.

The Conwy Valley in flood at Llanrwst. The level of the Glaslyn river beckons canoeists to navigate its flow, within a couple of miles two appear on a car to my rear.
